The ceiling fan transition

A camera on the ceiling, a slowly turning fan, and a new outfit every time a blade sweeps past is the overhead transition filling TikTok and Reels this week.

The shot looks straight down from the ceiling at someone lying on the floor. A wooden ceiling fan turns between the camera and the person, and every time a blade sweeps over them, they are wearing something else. The Tab called it the new viral AI trend on TikTok at the end of September, straight after the Hotel Lobby trend. Politixia covered it the next day, and template sites such as Pixazo and Media.io now make it from one photo. Done by hand, it means taping a phone to the ceiling and changing clothes between takes.

Why it works

The fan is a wipe that the room already has. Each blade hides the cut, so the change feels like a magic trick rather than an edit, and the steady turning gives the video a beat to time each new look to.

How this ingredient gives it to you

Ceiling Fan Wipe draws the fan and does the wipe. The fan is all code: wood or painted blades on metal arms, a brass, nickel, black or white motor cap, motion blur, soft focus and a soft shadow on the floor. You can change the Blade finish, Motor and arms, the number of Blades, Changes per loop, Fan position (hub in the corner or in the middle), Change style (the new look sweeps in behind the blade, or cuts all at once) and Turning direction. The demo wipes between four floors under window light, each with a lookbook caption. In your own project the looks can be your outfit photos, product colours, or other ingredients such as Soft Moving Gradient with Kinetic Title Reveal on top.

One limitation

It gives you the fan and the transition, not the person. The trend uses AI to restyle one photo into several outfits. Here you supply the looks yourself, as pictures or frames, and the fan wipes between them.

    Portraits made of text

Faces built from thousands of glowing characters, which decode out of noise and then type a line of text, are one of the signature looks of code-made AI video this fortnight.
